Wallslough Village, Co Kilkenny was the venue for this years South Leinster Finals for both Horses & Ponies. The Hughes family put in a superb effort to ensure that the facilities and ground were in tip top condition for the competitors on the day and this was applauded by all. The pony and horse classes have been well supported throughout the year at the local venues in the county and we have to thank especially the sponosors of all the classes, Youngs Motors, Smithwick Solicitors, Top Flight Equestrian, Caulfields Super Valu, Red Mills, Clear Round Catering, Uppercourt Stud & our newest sponsors Steaks Direct & Grassland Haylage. Without the support of the sponsors these shows would not be possible. Bursaries for training from some of our top local show jumping trainers was also on offer to the Pony Riders & Connollys Red Mills generously sponsored all the Horse leading riders with rugs, vouchers and jackets. The pony classes were all hotly contested on the day but it was Michael Pender who scooped both the 128 90cm and 128 1m class, generously sponsored by YOUNGS MOTORS to ensure that he took both red ribbons on the day and the leading rider awards for both the classes on Madges Jane Lady  John Murray riding Liz Murrays Qualtum QT left no stone unturned as he stopped the clock 3 seconds ahead of Rory Doyle and Coolio in the 138 1m SMITHWICKS SOLICITORS final with a superb clear round to take the win on the day. However it was not enough to secure the leading rider award that went to Victor Costello who had been cosistent throughout the league.   Sarah Kate Young sped to an amazing win in the 138 1.10m SMITHWICKS SOLICITORS final on Kiltormer Dan, being the only double clear of the event 5 seconds clear of Susie Ocborne on Milchem GTI, to ensure that she took not only the win in the final but also the overall leading rider award of the league.  The 148 1m and 1.10 classes were sponsored by Top Flight Equestrian & Caulfield Super Valu respectively. Hannah Holden ensured victory from Susan Fitzpatrick & Ghost Rider in the 148 1m final as Roxy Twister made nothing of the tight turns to scoop the win in fine style. Overall Leading Rider was Katie Russell & Lily Flight who had to settle for overall 3rd placeon the day, but this was enough to take the award for their efforts over the league, so congratulations to them.  In the 148 1.10 final the overall leading rider was Eoghan Murphy. Unfortunately Eoghan did not make the line up in the final jump off, but had enough points to carry the leading rider award for this class. The class winner in the final was William Hickey who was riding Lucy Hickeys Regardless, who rode by his name to score from second placed Aoife Dempsey & Montys Touch who were the only other double clear in this competiton. Pat Drennans courses for the horse classes caused the riders and horses a few dilemas across the day, with correct lines and accuracy being required across all the competitions. This proved excellent in the finals with jump offs being very competitive altogether. Connollys Red Mills sponsored the 1m horse final. Leading rider Andrew Thornton on Aphrodite Orca Phoenix was unlucky to make it through to the jump off after a late falling pole. However the combination had competed successfully throughout the league to tkae the overall leading rider award much to the owner Sarah Gannons delight.  On the day though it was Patrick Drennan on Randomer, last years leading rider, that stopped the clock marginally in front of the evergreen Jo Cruise and Mary Ellen O'Brien to take the prize on the day. Lisa O'Farrell slotted into 3rd on Maria Raggets Grovine Bullseye.  Gemma Drennan made it a very profitable week following up on her placings in Ennis at the National Horse Championships on Gods Gift, scooping the 1.10m final 4 seconds ahead of Cian Hutchinson on Castleroche Red October and Aishling Miklas on Lassban Miss Congeniality. Gemma also took the leading rider award after winning the majority of the league legs and also she took the 120m class which was a superb achievement for the league.  However Drennan was left out of the 120m jump off as were a good number of the field as it was reduced to 5 in the jump off. Marie Hartley and My Clover Mover posted the fastest time but 2 poles down put them back in the placings. Last to go was Michael Hutchinson (jnr) on his own LeeAnn as he took no prisoners to score by 3 seconds from Lisa O'Farrell riding HHS Funkytime, both posting the only double clear rounds in this class.  Six riders made it through to the 130m final jump off. Lisa O 'Farrell and Erkina Heather posted a careful and accurate round to secure the class from Eddie Moloney and Dante Van De Nordheuval. Sarah Lang & Kingdom Warrior although posting the fastest time in the jump off, tipped one too many pole and finished down the line up. However they had enough points to secure the overall leading rider award for the league.
